Lock & Key 03:21
Alarm clock, wake up/ Head scratch, where the hell am I? / Birmingham, Boston / Amsterdam, Austin / Stranger in a strange town / Yet again, but I don't really mind / ‘Cause everyday it’s honey drizzle, hot tea / Orange slice, heavy cream / Your face, smiling back at me / In the morning light, I wake to the sweetest dream / All I know is that happy is another sunrise / Be it rain or shine / Home is your pillow next to mine / You know you'll be sitting shotgun / Anywhere I roam / You and me are the lock and key to a happy home / Bird song, trash truck / Thank God to wake up in my bed / Dirty dishes, dog walks / Pulling weeds, pillow talk / Everyday the same thing / Ain't no place I’d rather be instead / ‘Cause everyday it’s honey drizzle, hot tea / Orange slice, heavy cream / Your face, smiling back at me / In the morning light, I wake to the sweetest dream / All I know is that happy is another sunrise / Be it rain or shine / Home is your slippers next to mine / You know how to tend my fire / To warm your bones / You and me are the lock and key to a happy home / All I know is that / Happy is another sunrise / Be it rain or shine / Home is your suitcase next to mine / You know you'll be sitting shotgun / Anywhere I roam / You and me are the lock and key to a happy home / To a happy home / We make a happy home
2.
Oh my friend, was it quiet at the end / Was your voice sore from trying, were your bones bent from crying / Cause I know how the dark makes its way into your heart / And whispers in your ear, that it’s better over here / Oh your heart was an aching open part / Growing outside with the weeds, like a mouth you could not feed / And every waking day was another debt to pay / From an empty penny jar, on the backseat of a car / Now I guess you know / What it’s like to lead yourself back home / What it’s like to face it all alone / Now you’re with the moon and with the stars / So tell me is it brighter in the dark? / Oh this world is an empty handed girl / With a mouth too full of words and a sky too full of birds / And the silent strings on her lonesome violin / Will always feel her hands, though the years had other plans / Now I guess you see / What it’s like to set your body free / What it’s like to have a place to be / Now you’re in the night sky with the stars / So tell me is it brighter in the dark?
3.
Beehive 03:10
“Place a beehive on my grave / And let the honey soak through / When I'm dead and gone / That's what I want from you / The streets of heaven are gold & sunny / But I'll stick with my plot and a pot of honey / Place a beehive on my grave / And let the honey soak through” / Shed no teardrops on my grave / Don't you cry for me / When I'm dead and gone / I'll be in good company / The King of Heaven is a real nice mister / But I'll stick with my Queen and ten thousand sisters / Shed no teardrops on my grave / Don't you cry for me / Dance a hambone on my grave / And pass the jug around / When I'm dead and gone / I said I wanna see you gettin' down / The harps in heaven are mighty sweet / But I'll take a / stomp and clap to a funky beat / Dance a hambone on my grave / And pass the jug around / “Place a beehive on my grave / And let the honey soak through”
4.
Silver spoon or pitchfork, baby / Tell me what's it gonna be / (Tell me what’s it gonna be, tell me what’s it gonna be?) / Do you want her oyster bar and caviar / Or do you want my mustard greens / (Do you want her, do you want her?) / Silver spoon or pitchfork, baby / Who's gonna give you what you need / Perrier or moonshine, baby / What you want to fill your glass / Do you want to play it safe and pump the brakes / Or slam down on the gas / Perrier or Moonshine, baby / Who's gonna knock you on your ass / Jesus Christ or Elvis, baby / Who you want to save your soul / Do you want her crown of thorns and Sunday scorn / Or do you want my rock 'n roll / Jesus Christ or Elvis, baby / I really gotta know / Silver spoon or pitchfork, baby / Tell me what's it gonna be / Do you want my dirty homegrown loving / Or her lap of luxury / Silver spoon or pitchfork, baby / Tell me what’s it gonna be / Who’s gonna give you what you need / Is it her or is it me?
5.
If I had known, I would have not been so hard / If I had known, I would have fixed up the car / If I had known, I would have come to the door / When you came in from the store / Never said that you were wrong / If I had known that you’d be gone / If I had known, our life would have been just like / A magic show where birds appear and then fly / Like the old days, in all the films when they’d kiss / And you’d say ‘Love’s not like this’ / I would have held you for so long / If I had known that you’d be gone / I’m not one to hang on to regret / But I can’t stand that there are moments I forget / And I don’t envy other people’s lives / But now I envy that guy / Who had you there by my side / If I had known, I would have walked right back in / When things got rough / Seemed so important to win / I left you there and went out drinking all night / Kept up my end of the fight / I thought that that made me strong / If I had known that you’d be gone / No regrets / ‘Cause there are things that you can’t plan / But yeah, I guess I could have been a better man / Now I don’t envy other people as a rule / But now I envy that fool / Who had you there in my hands / If I had known, I would’ve taken the time / Put down the phone / Opened that bottle of wine / We bought in France and saved for some perfect day / And then the time slipped away / The perfect day has come and gone / If I had known that you’d be gone / (I could have held you for so long if I had known)
6.
Spring 03:51
Make a joyful noise unto the world / Be you gentle boy or big strong girl / Break the silence with your song, it's the only cure / Make a joyful noise unto the sun / The wind chime orchestra has just begun / Daffodil trumpets proclaim Old Man Winter dead and gone / Life is lived, spring is sprung / Make a joyful noise unto the rain / Bullfrog choirs join in the refrain / Thunder is just a belly laugh at our silly human pain / Make a joyful noise unto the field / Every blade of grass a Zorba, kicking up his heels / The lowing of the calf baptized / By mother's patient tongue / Life is lived, spring is sprung / Make a joyful noise unto the moon / Crying of coyote, howling of the loon / Call out to the one you love, hurry up, it's almost June / Make a joyful noise unto your heart / Whisper secrets to the evening star / Do the best to twinkle in the eye of everyone / Know that every ending makes a space for new life to come / As tiny sticky fingers wrap around my giant calloused thumb / Life is lived, spring is sprung
7.
The mountains or the city, I'd go anywhere with you / As long as you tell me what you want me to do / It's one if by land and two if by sea / And for you, I'll be on my knees / My heart is an acre with an open sky above / The stars hang in their vapor, blinking in and out of love / But some things are constant, like the river to the sea / And for you, my love, I'll be on my knees / I don't care who's on the witness stand / My place in the world is right in the palm of your hand / Your wish is my command / So tell me, is it cherry, is it caramel or salt? / What is your craving, tell me what do you want? / To love you and to serve you, well that makes me feel free / So for you, my love, I'll be on my knees / Yes for you, my love, I'll be on my knees
8.
Oh, the sun shines / Through the dusty blinds / I wipe last night's regrets from my eyes / Clouds in my cup / Clouds in my head / A single girl in a double bed / Black tea and red wine / Don't worry, I'm doing fine / I tell the morning from the night / With my black tea and red wine / Oh, the phone rings / The kettle screams / I play nothing by Ray all damn day to drown out everything / Lists on my hand / Mail on the floor / Just the same as the day before / Black tea and red wine / Don't worry, I'm doing fine / Double-fisting to pass the time / With my black tea and red wine / Oh, stained teeth / Flaming cheeks / Another popcorn dinner and Cabernet to keep me company / The moon rolls her eyes / And shakes her head / At a single girl in a double bed / Black tea and red wine / Don't worry, I'm doing fine / Trying to keep you off my mind / With my black tea and red wine
9.
Red Balloon 04:30
I don't think I've ever told you this before / When I was a child I dreamed that I had found an old forgotten door / Guess that I was lonely, guess that I made up a lot of worlds / Guess that I knew pretty early that I was not like the other girls / Standing in the field / I told her how I feel / Guess that it was much too soon / Cause I went home with just a red balloon / Now I look up from my coffee, you are like a beacon in this room / That called to me so loud and strongly, I could not see anything but you / Now I watch you move / In and out of view / Just like in an old French movie / My heart floats just like a red balloon / Seems like you were never broken, like you sailed right through the wonder years / Life gave you a subway token, you took the line until you made it here / And not a day too soon / You flew around the moon / Someone let you go and you came to me, my red balloon
10.
Well, I am sick of laundry lists and laundry lines / And I am so tired of early to bed and early to rise / Sick of maybe laters, sick of tailgaters / Sick of all the haters with their pamphlets & signs / Sick of rush hour, of never getting flowers / Of staring at screens instead of into your eyes / I'm so sick and tired of being sick and tired / Goddammit, take me dancing / Whirl me across the floor / Out of my head, oh yeah / Until my feet are sore / Oh, buy me a drink / Sway me real slow / Until you see that girl / You fell in love with / A long, long time ago / Take me dancing / I am sick of house slippers and dishwater hands / And I am so tired of those Saturday night sweatpants / The shorter the dress, the higher the heels / The redder my lips, the better I feel / I’m so sick and tired of being no big deal / CHORUS / Slick back your hair / Shine up your shoes / It’s time we shake this bad, bad case of the ball and chain blues / CHORUS
11.
There’s a black man in the White House / They say everything’s OK / They say a long time ago, it was real bad, you know / But not today / But when the shots rang out in the middle of the heartland, no one had to try / It was just like any other day a black man woke up and died / So sing a song of six bullets, a pocket full of lies / And cut me off another piece of that American pie / There’s a black man in my neighborhood / He always seems to be good, or at least OK / When I see him on his front porch / He says, “Have a beautiful day” / But when the shots rang out in the city of Oakland, no one had to try / It was just like any other day a black man woke up and died / So sing a song of six bullets, a pocket full of lies / And cut me off another piece of that American pie / When the pie is opened the birds will sing and fly / And when I see them coming I’m gonna laugh, I’m gonna cry / Now Oprah, she’s on TV again / She’s everybody’s friend, yeah, it’s all OK / Back in ‘64 they passed a law / To be sure it would be this way / But when shots rang out on a Cleveland playground, no one had to try / It was just like any other day a black boy woke up and died / So sing a song of six bullets, a pocket full of lies / And cut me off another piece of that American pie / Yeah, cut me off another piece of the American pie
12.
I loved you in London, baby, I loved you in Rome / I loved you in New York City, a long way from home / We had our share of spoils, we tore up every town / Everyone said it’s time we settled down / I think that we should fly away / Over the hills into the woods / Over the place that no one said we could / I think that we should stay up late / Like we are young and unafraid / Like the red carpet's just been laid out for us / Out here in California, everything's dry / Fire sears the earth and water stays up in the sky / Feels like the whole world's waiting, feels like the way I've been / Feels like the rain will never come again / I think that we should fly away / Over the hills into the woods / Over the place that no one said we could / I think that we should come undone / Like we have only just begun / Like the red carpet's just been laid out for us / So I’ll go out and watch the stars tonight / I know they only show their previous life / They sent a message back when this was all holy ground / So I could see them shining on me now
13.
Oh hi there, Mr. Jerk Face in the Whole Foods parking lot / It must be nice to slide right in to the very last parking spot / Never mind that I circled ten times just to buy overpriced health food / But you know what, Mr. Prius? / Good for you! / Well, in the South they say ‘Bless your heart!’ / In New York, they’d flip you the bird / But in the Midwest, the passive aggressive will get you the last word / Out in the Bay, they say ‘namaste’ / But I’m getting back to my roots / Instead of saying ‘Go f* yourself!’ I say, ‘Good for you’/ Oh hi there, little Miss Overnight Millionaire Pop Star In The News / It must be nice to sing pointless words with every note auto-tuned / Never mind the decades I spent writing heartfelt songs for less than minimum wage / When I’m just as pretty, I’m twice as smart / And I’m probably three times your age / CHORUS / Tell me, what’s it like? / Oh well, that must be nice / Good for you

about

Mouths of Babes recorded their highly anticipated first full-length album, Brighter In the Dark at Prairie Sun Studios in northern California in August 2016 on the strength of a wildly successful, 800-backer, $56,000 Kickstarter campaign. Released in January 2017, the self-produced album contains twelve original songs with contrasting themes of light and dark, tragedy and comedy, personal and political. Mixed by Stewart Lerman (Dar Williams, Bob Dylan), Brighter features guest appearances from Birds of Chicago, Tania Elizabeth (The Avett Brothers), Mai Bloomfield (Jason Mraz) and others.

No Depression writes, “Mouths of Babes could never have predicted how necessary Brighter In The Dark [would be] in a post-Trump world. The album title is fitting. We need music that shows people struggling against social expectations, that reminds us that we all have the resilience we need to make it through.” And the Thinking Lyrically blog gives the album 9 stars out of 10: "An eclectic arsenal of songs, showcasing their knack for fusing blues, folk, and soul with poetic lyrics [and] great choruses...an incredibly versatile record. One of my new favourite listens.”
