about

Written by: Ingrid Elizabeth
Genre: pop, singer-songwriter, catchy
Tempo: Mid-tempo
Mood: cutesy, retro, lovey dovey
Similar to: Ingrid Michaelson, The Weepies, Sara Bareilles
Backstory: Ingrid says, "I’ve always wanted to write a ‘wedding song.’ Like many of my songs, this one was a slow-cooker. This song started brewing many years ago when a close friend asked us to sing at her wedding (as many of our friends, family, and fans do) and mentioned a fun anecdote that involved Webster’s Dictionary as a central part of their courtship ritual. I have several ‘word nerds’ in my life (I even married one – Ty has a BA in Fiction Writing), and it never fails that no matter how intelligent and articulate someone may be, there’s an incurable spell of speechlessness that falls over them upon glimpsing their true love. I suffer from it myself. It took many years of playing at various weddings to finally piece all these experiences together (including my own) to come up with this little ditty. The fanfare of trumpets at the end of the song is my favorite part – especially the hat tip to 'Here Comes the Bride' at the very end."

lyrics

I DO © 2023 Ingrid Elizabeth

Hey you
Is all that I could say
It’s true
First time you flashed that smile my way
Despite degrees framed on the wall
Like the trembling leaves I was born to fall
Feathered heart and a tongue of lead
This is what I wish I’d said

Of all the letters that I wrote to you
In my heart’s steaming cup of alphabet soup
Of all the words that Webster ever knew
If I could only pick two: I do.

When I look at you I hear
Wedding bell alarm clocks in my head
I wanna chase you around the bed
Spread my jam on your homemade bread
We’ll stitch each and every day together
Wrap it around us it in the roughest weather
And stay tongue-tied forever

Of all the letters that I wrote to you
In my heart’s steaming cup of alphabet soup
Of all the words that Webster ever knew
If I could only pick two
When I look at you… I do.
