about

Written by: Ty Greenstein
Genre: folk pop, Americana, singer-songwriter
Tempo: Driving, mid-tempo
Mood: angsty, driving, lonely, salty
Similar to: Mumford & Sons, Brandi Carlile
Backstory: Ty says, "This is one of those raw, first-draft songs that I wrote in maybe an hour and didn’t end up editing a single word — it felt so honest that I just decided to leave it like that. This song is about the experience of being ghosted. Why don’t we see it coming? Why is it always the person we trusted the most? Being ghosted leaves you with complex grief, because the person is still alive but you are essentially dead to them. And even if you try to move on, there’s all this evidence of your closeness — the millions of pictures of you together, the songs you used to listen to, the gifts and cards. So what do you do with that stuff? Keeping it feels hard, and getting rid of it feels like burning your past. I wrote this song from a deeply wounded and unresolved place about someone who was like a sister to me who I’m no longer in touch with at all. And even though the song felt incredibly personal when I wrote it, I can see now how universal it is."

lyrics

PICTURES OF YOU © 2023 Ty Greenstein

I open the front door
The neighbor's kids are out
Drawing lines in chalk
Today I'll stay inside
Hoarding all my doubts
My secret pain is out

So what do I do with these pictures of you
And of us by the millions, in cars and in canyons
And what do you say to a ghost anyway?

Now, silent as a storm
Way out in the field
I am newly born to this world
Just like I was once
In my mother's arms
Made of flesh and trust

So what do I do with these pictures of you
And of us by the millions, in cars and in canyons
And what do I say when it's you in my dreams
And you're still like a statue ignoring my pain
And how do I answer the voice in my head
When it tells me I must have deserved what you said
And what do you say to a ghost anyway?

I'll take this time to think
Walk my dog again
Up to where the land bows down to the sea
On its soiled knees, on the chance that we…
To the hope that all of this was somehow meant to be
And I am still alive
Even with you gone
Here now is a song

So what do I do with these pictures of you
And of us by the millions, in cars and in canyons
And what do I say when it's you in my dreams
And you're still like a statue ignoring my pain
And how do I answer the voice in my head
When it tells me I must have deserved what you said
And what do you say to a ghost anyway?
