Backstory: This is one of those songs that simply comes ‘through you’, rather than being ‘of’ you. This is not my story, but rather inspired by a few people very close to my heart who are no longer with us. I witnessed the inescapable pain their struggles with mental illness and/or addiction issues caused them and the ones they love. An acknowledgment they couldn’t bear to voice in the living days, but somehow came through so clearly in this song. How they wanted so desperately not to pass on that same heaviness and hurt to their own children. This song explores the idea of intentionally breaking the chain of generational trauma: “Oh my babies, I beseech you, do as I say and not as I do / Of my blood I wish to set you free / May this sickness die with me.”
Tell me, how did it come to this?
Stranded in a bottle out at sea
They all loved me best they could
Though my best was seldom good
There was never another way for me
Oh my babies, I beseech you
Do as I say and not as I do
Of my blood, I wish to set you free
And may this sickness die with me
Shouting at the starless sky above
Gravel and broken glass beneath my feet
Once the train begins to roll
I lose all self-control
Even through their tears to please let it be
Oh my babies, I beseech you
Do as I say and not as I do
Of my sins, I wish to wash you clean
And may this sickness die with me
I don’t know who I’m praying to
Ain’t no God would have let it go this far
May you never know this bottomless fear
May you never do the damage I have done
May you never feel estranged
Held hostage by your rage
With your every move on both sides of the gun
Oh my babies, I beseech you
Do as I say and not as I do
Of my blood, I wish to set you free
And may this sickness die with me
Of my fate, I wish to set you free
So, may this sickness die with me
