SUMMERTIME
Written by: Ingrid Elizabeth
Genre: Americana, Southern rock, roots rock, soulful folk
Tempo: Mid-tempo
Mood: LGBTQ, retro, summer, lovesong
Similar to: Mary Chapin Carpenter, Bonnie Raitt, John Cougar Mellencamp, Grace Potter
Backstory: Ingrid says, "‘Summertime’ is a reboot of a song I recorded with my previous Americana/roots band, Coyote Grace. That version is a bit twangy and more country-fied. Growing up in a small, rural town in Southeastern Ohio, I was steeped in country music. But I was also raised on a steady diet of Motown and 60s pop/soul classics like the Ronettes, Aretha Franklin, and The Temptations. For this version, I infused more of my soul and southern rock roots into the groove to set the tone.
And of course, this is a love song – universal in its ‘hot summer romance’ sentiment yet through a distinctly queer/LGBTQ+ lens. I am a firm believer that we need to ‘write the country/Americana songs we want to hear in the world’ – and in my case, where queer love is the protagonist and despite the small town culture, it is allowed to thrive and be seen and celebrated. That we queer country kids get to have our ‘summer love song’ radio hits, too. When it comes to inclusivity, Americana music has come a long way in the last few years, certainly since I first wrote this song 15 years ago. But in this current political climate, to proudly proclaim 'boys like her like the girls like me' is inherently political and more necessary than ever to carve out our place in this society."
I was a watercolor girl in a tintype town
The locals looked me up and down
Love to watch their heads spin when we come around
Me and my sweet baby
She was a tall glass of lemonade
Always had me sweating in the shade
Stole my first kiss from me in the first grade
Lord, I knew she was the one
Berries in the bucket, baby's on a blanket
Tomatoes hanging heavy on the vine
The underwear is dancing to a Patsy Cline song
Out on the laundry line
In a field of lightning bugs that put the country stars to shame
We're gonna get higher than the corn tonight
'Cause boys like her
Bring me some some some of that summertime
With watermelon chins and sunscreen hands
Mosquito bites and farmer tans
She slipped a dandelion ring on my left hand
'Cause she knew I was the one
The days get hotter, we go down to the water
Past the city limit sign, leave the locals behind
Skipping stones, digging toes in the sand
We left our bathing suits on dry land
When the sun goes down, we get to rolling around
And fogging up the windows with (uh uh uh)
I left my heart in the glove compartment
Of a dusty old baby blue pick-up truck
Berries in the bucket, baby's on a blanket
Tomatoes hanging heavy on the vine
The underwear is dancing to a Bonnie Raitt song
Out on the laundry line
We made fireworks that put the city park to shame
The neighbors must’ve thought it was the 4th of July
'Cause boys like her
Bring me some some some of that summertime
Now happiness is a front porch swing
Forever is a dandelion ring
This barefoot queen and her flatbed king
We know every song the radio sings
In perfect three-part harmony
And Thank God…
That boys like her like the girls like me
Boys like her
Like the girls like me
