Backstory: Ty says, "'World Brand New' is a song about longing for — and celebrating — youth, along with the simple, analog joys of the world. I was thinking of a time in my life when listening to records front to back, taking long walks with no headphones, sitting around playing the guitar and singing with friends for hours — those things were enough because life was new and everything was exciting. I wrote it during the early days of shelter-in-place, when Ingrid and I were trapped in a tiny one-bedroom apartment in Berkeley, and I was missing the world in a larger sense. I loved playing the little electric guitar lick on this tune, which brought the whole thing together. It reminded me of the Van Morrison song 'Brown Eyed Girl,' another song that’s joyous rather than wistful in its nostalgia. The message can be boiled down to: “Isn’t it great that we’ve had these experiences and know how to feel alive? Let’s do that again!”
I wanna read a magazine
I wanna put an old record on
I wanna sit on the stoop with a beer
And the sun sinking down on the neighbor’s lawn
I wanna play you a brand new song
I wrote it just for you
I wanna get in the car and drive
Like we’ve got nothing else to do
And make the world brand new
I wanna take a walk alone
I wanna lose track of space and time
Wanna cross the railroad tracks
Hit the dirt road back where the kids get high
I wanna find a lucky dime
Skip it out on the lake
I wanna think about better times
And how much love it takes
To make the world brand new
I wanna sit with a guitar in a room
Just me and you
And forget everything
We’re supposed to do
And play every song
We’ve known all along
That’s what we long to do
I wanna kiss your honey lips
In the garden with the sugarplums
I wanna lie on the grass with my face
Flushing red from the wine in the midday sun
I want to feel your body rise
Like the bread I baked by hand
I want to feel it all come true
Baby like we used to do
When the world was new
I wanna lay my body down
After a day of playing hard
I wanna feel it sinking deep
Slip into a restful sleep
Wake from a brilliant dream
Of flying over fields
I want feel the love I want
I wanna want the love I feel...
I wanna read a magazine
I wanna put an old record on
I wanna sit on the stoop with a beer
And the dogs running wild on the neighbor’s lawn
I wanna watch them howling free under a sky so blue
Baby that was you and me
Baby that was me and you
When the world was new
Let’s make the world brand new
